Thorvald Meyers gate 38 is the district's former fire and police station from 1876, designed by architect Jacob Wilhelm Nordan. The property was completely refurbished in 2016 into a state-of-the-art property. There is also a completely refurbished senior centre in the courtyard with a very good standard. On the 3rd and 4th floors, as well as on the second floor of the old police station building in the backyard, Maya Apartments has 16 beautiful, urban and furnished apartments for short-term rental.
In October 1873, the plot at Thorvald Meyers gate 38 was purchased as a site for a local police and fire station. From the time the land was purchased until it went into operation, five years would pass.
From April 17, 1878 to January 10, 1973, the building was used as a fire station and jail. The station was not just a building, but a compound consisting of a large main building with two smaller buildings in the courtyard. All the buildings were built in plastered brick.
There is a clock set at the top of the tower in the middle section - a style that is reminiscent of architect Nordan's police headquarters in Møllergata 19 (1866-1877). The top of the façade features a round-arched cornice throughout. Another characteristic feature of the building is that the street façade has been retracted slightly compared to the neighbouring apartment buildings.
In addition to being used by municipal enterprises, the house also contained a number of apartments. According to the 1885 census, there were 41 residents living here, most of whom worked for the fire department, including the fire chief, assistant fire chief, firefighters and their families.
