Room for a greener future
MAYA's environmental strategy forms the basis for the development, construction and operation of our residential and commercial projects. We emphasise sustainable solutions with an emphasis on good architecture, durable materials, energy efficiency, biodiversity, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Our solutions must satisfy the needs of the future and the buildings must make a positive contribution to the cityscape.
Since 1992, we have been building homes and commercial buildings that will stand for generations. This means that we think long-term – not just about what looks good now, but about what will work in 30 years.
Good insulation and efficient heat pumps significantly reduce electricity consumption. We have already reduced our greenhouse gas emissions from heating by 80 per cent since 2010. Our goal is a 95 percent reduction by 2030. Not because anyone compels us to do so, but because it makes sense – both for the environment and for our customers who have to pay the electricity bill.
When choosing materials, we ask ourselves: how long will this last? How much energy is used to make it? What happens when the building is demolished in 50 years?
We use wood from sustainable forestry, natural stone that becomes more beautiful over the years, and steel that can be recycled. Not because it's trendy, but because it's smart. Buildings that are built to last need less maintenance and have lower costs and less environmental impact over time.
At our construction sites, we sort more than 85 percent of our waste. Much of what was previously thrown away is now being turned into new materials. Old concrete turns into gravel for in new foundations. Wood is given a new lease on life as furniture or building materials.
Our first green roof was established at Bergknapptaket. It doesn't just look great – it purifies the air, manages rainwater and gives insects and birds a habitat in the middle of the city.
Our outdoor areas are designed together with landscape architects who understand which plants thrive in the Oslo climate. We choose species that provide food for bees and butterflies, that change character with the seasons, and that need minimal care.
It's about creating small oases of nature in the city – places where both people and animals can breathe freely.
At our administration and operations centre, we have established ten charging points for electric cars. Not only for our employees, but also for visitors. We have secure bicycle parking, changing rooms and showers for those who cycle to work.
By 2030, all transport in connection with the operation and maintenance of our properties will be climate neutral. Our vans already run on electricity. Soon there will also be electric construction machines that can replace diesel-powered excavators and cranes.
All of this may sound technical, but what you notice is the practical difference: lower electricity bills. A better indoor climate. Less noise from technical facilities. Outdoor areas that invite you to stay throughout the year.
And when you choose to live or work in a MAYA building, you become part of the Oslo region's green transition. You help us achieve the goal of becoming virtually climate neutral by 2030.
We don't just build homes and offices. We build the future – one block at a time.
